What is a "Rice Buddy"?
A "Rice Buddy" is for the baby animals to cuddle up against when they are little, a sort of momma substitute, and they are also an alternative heating source in case you have no heating pad or hot water bottle available and need to warm up a baby animal. Rice acts as a heat conductor; it stores the heat for a few hours and releases it slowly.
What you need:
Assemble your Rice Buddy:
Fill the old sock 3/4 with rice. Leave enough room so you can make a knot on top of the sock to close the "Rice Buddy".
Put the rice-filled sock into the microwave for 2 minutes. If it steams when done, let the steam evaporate. Wrap the warm sock into the soft fabric. Make a tight knot on each end of the Rice Buddy so it looks like a big piece of candy.
Notes:
"Rice Buddies" are re-usable and easy to keep clean if you wash the outer fabric after each use.
You could use plastic wrap in between the outer fabric and sock, but you have to practice CAUTION, because you are risking suffocating the babies if they manage to crawl inside the fabric and get to the plastic wrap! Never underestimate a baby animal!
