Birth Preparation

Author: admin

A pregnant cat can usually manage to deliver her kittens herself without any intervention from you; in fact, many an owner has woke in the morning to find that they became “grandparents” overnight!  This isn’t the case for every cat however, and so if you have a pregnant cat then there are a few things you need to do in preparation for the birth.

  1. You should read up about feline pregnancy and how cats deliver their kittens.
  2. You need to know the signs of imminent delivery so if possible you can be around if mamma cat gets into any difficulties.
  3. Observe quietly but be prepared to step in if things don’t seem to be going according to what you’ve read in the books.
  4. Have a number for a 24-hour vet close to the phone just in case you need it.

Feline pregnancy is like human pregnancy is that each one is more or less the same, yet has its own characteristics.  Most babies are delivered without complications, as are kittens.  But if you have a pregnant cat, especially a young one who is little more than a kitten herself, there could be complications that you need to help with and by educating yourself in advance of how you can assist your cat if she gets into difficulties with the delivery of her kittens, you’ll be confident that you know what to do, or at least who to call for advice.
