Teaching Your Cockatiel to Talk

Teaching Your Cockatiel to Talk

If you are the new owner of a Cockatiel, then you already know these birds are known to mimic or copy whatever sound or noise they hear. This is probably the very reason for your Cockatiel purchase. The Cockatiel can be found in Australia and have been found to belong to the Cockatoo Family. Although, other bird lovers will tell you the Cockatiel belongs to the Parakeet Family as well.

If a Cockatiel lives in captivity that is in someone’s home they can live as long as fifteen to twenty years. It has also been reported that if a Cockatiel is well cared for by given a good diet, they can live around twenty-seven years. A Cockatiel is also known to be a very sociable bird. Once the Cockatiel and their owner have been acquainted for a while, the two will develop a special bond. This bond might make it easier for the Cockatiel to be tamed or even talk.

Many people will decide on a Cockatiel for the sole purpose of teaching it to talk. It is usually a hope that when the Cockatiel is purchased, it already knows some words or phrases. The majority of the time, this is not the case. With that said, the majority of Cockatiels who will talk are the males. By 9 weeks old, it has been reported that a male Cockatiel will begin to mimic or copy their owner’s words being spoken.

The best words to begin with are simple one’s like, “Hello”, “Hi” and “Hey Pretty Bird”. Just like with human babies, it is best to keep repeating your words until the Cockatiel will ’catch on’ and eventually say the word you use more often. If there are a lot of noises or sounds in your home, such as the telephone ringing, dryer bell going off or a door bell sounding off, your Cockatiel will begin mimicking this sound.

Pet stores will usually sell specific cockatiel talk CD’s or Tape’s in the bird aisle. These CD’s or Tape’s will have several recorded sounds on it of someone whistling or simple songs. It is best to find songs that do not have too many notes. Again, just a like a human baby, it begins with one word at a time and constant repetition. The mind or brain learns through constant repetition for anything in life. This goes for learning to talk and speak a new language as well.

Before I go, I have just found a really great blog on Enigin. It has all sorts of exciting new energy saving plans and campaigns, and some pretty delightful posts as well! You should all check it out!

Tips To Stop Your Cat From Excessively Meowing

Tips To Stop Your Cat From Excessively Meowing

A cat’s meow is as normal as a dog’s barking, however, when your cat begins to meow excessively, it could mean something. The first thing you want to rule out when your cat begins to meow all the time is illness. You want to be sure that there is not something that is jeopardizing your cat’s health so be sure to take a quick trip to the vet’s to rule this out. Once you have ruled out illness, you can take the following suggestions below to minimize the meowing before it begins to drive you crazy.

* Hunger – This is usually one of biggest reasons for the constant meow. Make sure there is plenty of food and water for your cat and that it knows exactly where to find it.

* Attention – Another reason why your cat might be meowing if because it is looking for attention. Show it some attention, however, do not constantly coddle it every time it meows. Instead, try not to respond to it during this excessive meowing period.

* Playtime – Give your cat plenty of playtime during the day so that it sleeps at night. This can be hard in some cats because generally, cats are nocturnal. With repetition, you can change your cat’s schedule so you can get a good night’s sleep.

* Water – A great method to use that will help minimize the meowing is to get yourself a spray bottle and fill it up with water. When the meowing becomes overwhelming, give your cat a little spray. Do not abuse this method with every meow though.

* Going outside – Your cat might want to go outside. This can be especially true if you have allowed your cat to venture outdoors before. In this case, a good cat flap should do the trick. It can be easily installed on any door. This will allow your cat to come in and out as it pleases.

It is important that you do show your cat lots of love and attention. However, when times get a bit busy and your cat’s meow is driving you nuts, you can try some of the tips above to see if they help.

One last thing, if any of you are dying to know, check out the new illustrations that just went up for exhibition stands. That was my skilled hand at photoshop!
