If you are one of those people with a dog that seems to love to dig more than normal then it will be a bother to you. Chances are your dog may be digging in your flower garden or even worse your neighbour’s. This is a behaviour you will want to understand and if you can, stop.
Digging, based on research, is deemed a very natural behaviour for dogs. There are a number of reasons why dogs dig and these reasons include searching for a spot that is cool, finding things they buried before, and because they are bored. There are dogs that simply enjoy digging.
How to prevent digging in your dog (I learnt all of these things from a very reliable source over at Locum vet jobs)
It is possible to train your dog so that he digs in a spot that is acceptable to you.
Start off by going in the backyard and selecting a spot where you can build a sand box or a dirt box made of wood. Make the box no less than a foot deep and fill it with sand or dirt. Sprinkle a bit of water on top so that the sand keeps moist. Then you put a few toys in the box and hide them. Use your dog’s favourite toys to hide.
Next you will do your best to motivate your dog to do its digging inside the box you built. Keep an eye on your dog throughout this process and if they should start to dig in a location other than the box you must take them back to the box.
To reduce the likelihood of your dog digging, ensure that their social and physical needs have been met. Also ensure your dogs have plenty to do to occupy their time.
