Neutering Your Dog: The Pros And Cons

While completing the process for acquiring equine insurance I was asked a good friend of mine about neutering their dog and its pros and cons. Here I share what I told him.
The procedure involved in the neutering of a male dog is generally known as castration. Castration is simply the process of removing the testes that is between the dog’s scrotum and its penis, usually involving an incision. Mainly, the reasons why male dogs are being castrated include, birth control, in order to stop some territorial behaviours like urine marking, in order to stop some sexual behavior like masturbation, to tame aggressive behaviours, and so on.
There also some reasons why some people do not want to castrate their male dogs. These reasons include unwanted weight gain which may lead to diabetes and other health problems, the cost of castration, some associated anesthetic risks, and so on.
On the other hand, the procedure involved in the neutering of a female dog is generally known as spaying. The spaying of a female dog is the process of removing the uterus and the ovaries by the use of surgical incisions. The reasons for spaying a female dog include; the purpose of birth control, to eliminate the development of uterine cancer, to eliminate the development of pyometra, to decrease the occurrence of breast cancer in later life, and many more. Also, the reasons why people do not want to spay their female dogs include; unnecessary weight gain, the cost of spaying, and to avoid anesthetic risks. <
