Feline Idiopathic Cystitis
Feline Idiopathic Cystitis is a type of inflammation seen in cats. It affects your cat’s bladder which commonly leads to urinary tract problems.
Some of the tell-tale signs of FIC are increase in urination frequency, spots of blood in urine, and difficulty in passing urine. If you see your cat straining while passing urine, and it happens every time, then nine out of ten times it is a urinary disorder that is most of the times FIC.
Causes:
Viral Infection- Laboratory culture analysis of infected cat’s urine often shows signs of feline calcivirus, which has been linked to FIC.
Dietary Reasons- Some vets tend to believe that when cat’s diet consists entirely of dry food, it can lead to urinary tract disorders.
Stress Related- Cats are not meant to live indoors. Prolonged periods of indoor stay within locked houses can lead to stress. Treatment:
Every cat is different and your vet is the best person to pen down best treatment for your cat. But generally a cat positively diagnosed with FIC is prescribed following treatment-
- Increased intake of water. Arrange for unlimited supply of fresh water. Find ways of encouraging your cat to take in more fluids.
- Change your cat’s diet from all dry food to better quality canned food.
- Learn how you can reduce your cat’s stress level. Ask your vet for advice.
Apart from the above your vet will also be prescribing some drugs based on the specific condition of your cat.
