So my best friend, while he was looking at teaching English jobs overseas, was telling me about a friend of his who has a cat that has leukemia. I was curious about the treatments for this condition so I did some checking. Here is what I learnt.
Feline Leukemia treatment can only control the signs of the disease but there is no cure invented yet.
FeLV is a dangerous virus for cats just like HIV for humans. The body fluids inside saliva, urine and the nasal secretions contain this deadly virus. Once you notice the symptoms, you should visit a veterinarian to perform some tests required for diagnosis.
Once your cat is diagnosed, the veterinarian will start checking for lymphosarcoma, anemia, kidney diseases, etc. It is important as the disease might make the cat disposed to these infections.
The current treatments that have been developed will only try to stop the disease from spreading just like therapies and medications helps to prevent HIV virus from spreading. But there is no way to treat this virus completely.
If the veterinarian finds any secondary bacterial infection, they will give some antibiotics. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy will be required if your cat develops a tumor or cancer. Usually Lymp hocyte T-Cell Immune Therapy, Antiviral drugs are suggested for treating this virus. But that’s all a veterinarian will be able to do. It will just improve your cat’s life for a while. You will have to keep him indoors if you want to avoid infections agents.
