In many places, winter is a season of bitter cold and numbing wetness, and that calls for extra car when it comes to our dogs.
Try not to leave your dog outside when the temperature drops. When you have to, for example when you take your dog for exercise, keep and eye on it. If your dog has an outdoor doghouse, make sure that it is draft-free and large enough for the dog to settle down comfortably. The house, moreover, should be turned to face away from the wind and its doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.
Another warming tip for your dog is providing more food served in plastic, rather than metal, bowls. Also make sure to keep the salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice, and the antifreeze away from your dog.
Dogs are one the best social animals who crave to be inside with their human friends. Just let them in the house, and enjoy your friendship in the warmth.
Many parents accept that dogs and children are often a wonderful combination but children can also be taught to have a responsibility for pets. The important thing is that the tasks and the responsibilities are age related.
Surprisingly even toddlers can be involved even if it is only in accompanying a parent when they take a dog to the vet. Children learn that dogs and vets are at times inevitable.
Toddlers can have a special duty that of rewarding the dog. The reward should of course be a dog friendly reward a treat for good behaviour. Both dogs and children respond well to this task. Toddlers can also fill water bowls and food bowl with adult supervision. One of the best ways to teach children dog responsibility is to take them both out for a walk. The age that a child can take a dog out on his own depends on where you live and the child. If you live in a built up area with a lot of traffic perhaps ten or eleven would be appropriate. However they can play with a dog unsupervised before that in the dogs exercising area. Children can always feed the dog but to remember that they have to take responsibility to actually feed the dog should not be before the child is about seven.
Once the child is a teenager they can take responsibility for most things except of course the financial responsibility!
The carcinogenic substances found in cigarettes are harmful to tissue but recent research at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital headed by John Reif, professor of epidemiology, has found that pets are as at risk of heart disease and lung cancer as humans. The more people smoke within the household, the higher their dogs' risk of developing cancer[1]. The shape of the dog’s nose actually increases the risk for some dogs. Not surprisingly dogs with long noses such as the Afghans and collies expose of the dogs nose to the harmful elements in cigarette smoke and they are more at risk. There risk of getting cancer is twice as high if they live with a family of smokers. The research found that the levels of toxins can stay in a dog’s body for months after they have been exposed to secondhand smoke.
However it is not just cancer that is the problem pats can be allergic to cigarette smoke and it may cause asthma, lung infections or lung inflammation. [1] John S. The most common mistake dog owners make in their relationships with dogs is treating them like people. Imagine a horse. Would you interact with that horse the same you interact with your sister? Of course not! So why do humans insist on treating dogs like people?
Do you really believe that your dog will stop tearing up the couch if you plead with him, love on him some more, or show him more affection? This might work in human relationships, but not for your dog or any animal that I know.
Loving your dog means treating him like a dog. He needs a stable pack leader to lead a balanced and happy life. Bear in mind, it’s us humans that make these relations complicated, not the dogs.
Rule of thumb: the bigger the breed the bigger damage.
It is crucial to recognize the power of a strong breed such as the Pit Bull, the American Bulldog, or the Mastiff for example. They can destroy almost anything in an instant.
Know that these dogs do not dream of ending up in the news when they grow up. Dogs don't premeditate like people do. Bad things happen when powerful breeds live with humans who don't understand the animal in the dog but simply love the breed.
To maintain control over a powerful breed you need to become the dog’s pack leader and establish rules, boundaries and limitations. You need to fulfill the dog as Nature intended for him.
Only frustrated and dominant dogs become aggressive. The frustration comes from a lack of exercise and the dominance comes from a lack of calm, assertive leadership.
The importance of exercise can’t be stressed enough! Physical activity burns the dog’s excess energy and maintains his healthy state of mind. This is important because in order to talk to the mind you need to remove the energy from the body.
If you own an aggressive dog, I urge you to find a professional dog trainer to work with you both. Many so-called aggressive dogs can be rehabilitated with time and dedication. After all, we owe it to our dogs to at least try.
Knowing how to fulfill a dog will allow him to live a balanced and happy life.
Many dog owners call their dogs their soul mate or their children. But then the dog chews up furniture and yanks the owner all over the street on a walk. The owner pleads with the dog to behave, begs the dog, and offers him treats. Does this help the dog to change? No, of course not!
Why? Dogs are not human! They respond to calm, assertive leadership not emotional arguments or negotiations. Knowing how to fulfill a dog will allow him to live in a balanced way and achieve a healthy state of mind.
Dogs don't need humans to live a balanced life. But when they live with us, we need to help them find that balance. It is our responsibility to fulfill their needs as nature intended them to be fulfilled within the pack.
